Frequently Asked Questions

Does this take the place of a diagnostic Medical ultrasound that my doctor orders?

No. This is a non-diagnostic ultrasound. Prior to having a 3D/4D scan you must already be receiving treatment with a healthcare provider for prenatal care and have already undergone a second trimester medical, diagnostic ultrasound ordered by your provider to confirm your due date, screen for fetal anomalies, and to look for any other pregnancy related issues. At no time is this exam to be used in place of a complete diagnostic ultrasound.

Is it safe? Are there any risks to me, or my baby?

Extensive studies over 30 years have found that ultrasound has not been shown to cause any harm to mother or baby. Routine scanning of all pregnancies is now normal throughout Canada. In 3D/4D scanning, exactly the same type and intensity of ultrasound is used as with conventional 2D scanning.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, we schedule by appointments only. We recommend that you schedule at least 6 weeks in advance. As we are reserving an appointment for each patient, please contact us not less than 24 hours in advance in the event that you need to reschedule or cancel.

When is the best time to have a 3D/4D Ultrasound?

We recommend that the scan be performed between 25 and 32 weeks.

Will I always get a beautiful picture of my baby?

Usually, but sometimes if the baby is in a difficult position, such as with the spine up and face looking down or being covered, it may be difficult to obtain clear facial views. Every baby scans differently, depending on the gestational age, position, amount of fluid, and maternal body habitus. With the combination of our experienced technologist and the best 3D/4D equipment, every effort will be made to obtain the best possible images of whatever parts of the baby that can be seen.

Can I bring my family and friends?

Yes. This is a joyous and wonderful experience, one that can be shared with your family and loved ones.

Are you able to tell the sex of the baby?

Yes. We can't however guarantee that the baby will cooperate during your session. Certain factors such as the fetal position can affect the ability to determine sex. Gender determination is not 100% accurate.

What is the difference between 3D & 4D image compare to the 2D?

The 2D (2 dimensional) image is the flat black and white picture that looks like an outline or skeletal image of your baby that you get at your diagnostic ultrasound.

The 3D (3 dimensional) image will look more realistic, like a detail photograph of your baby.

The 4D (4 dimensional) uses the 3D technology to view your baby in "live motion" like a video.

What Ultrasound equipment do you use to perform the 3D/4D Ultrasounds?

We use the state of the art GE Voluson 730 EXPERT to complete all ultrasound examinations. The GE Voluson 730 has been seen in GE television commercials and many printed articles from around the world. This machine is the best 2D, 3D and 4D ultrasound machine available. Please note, many organizations claim to use "state-of-the-art" equipment, when in fact they use older or inferior technology.

Who performs the ultrasound scans and what are their credentials?

All of our technologists are Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS) with years of experience in the healthcare field.

I am having twins. When is the best time for 4D ultrasound?

The best time is between 22 - 24 weeks. Please book your appointment accordingly.

How long will my appointment take?

Times will vary depending on the cooperation of the baby. Typically you should plan on spending about 30 - 45 minutes with us. Your 3D/4D ultrasound session will be around 20-25 minutes, but please arrive 10 minutes early to fill out your paperwork. By the time you leave, we will have your DVD, CD and several black and white thermal ultrasound prints in 3D ready to take with you!
